What beers have you tried recently...

We are approaching the third week of my Wellesley College Wintersession course, The Beer Necessities. The only homework assignment is for students to go out and try a new beer and to review it. Here is a place to share some of those reviews and to start some discussion about them. Feel free to just tell me what you tried and whether you liked it or not, or give us a couple of lines about it. So, what beers have you tried recently...

Last night I had a Port Brewing Company Hop-15 Ale. It is a Double IPA and absolutely fantastic. It weighed in at a whopping 10% abv and had a delicious hop profile. They used 15 different kinds of hops and added them every 15 minutes. The combination of grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors with caramel malt sweetness, touches of dried fruit, and a hint of peppery spicyness from the alcohol, make this a fantastic beer. I slowly sipped this one for about 2 hours.

I tried a UFO and it wasn't out of this world. Har har. It is a Harpoon's UnFiltered Offering, raspberry hefeweizen. I was expecting more of a taste, but kind of felt like it tasted like a runny, beer flavored, raspberry water. So sad. It's one good point was the lovely carbonation- loads of bubbles. Good with salad and sweet potato. Not a pushy or attention grabbing beer.

Interesting evaluation. I am not a huge fan of the Harpoon UFO beers and generally I am not high on fruit beers, so I agree with you. You should be able to get that great carbonation from most good hefe-weizens, so go out there and try a few more.

I tried the Smuttynose Robust Porter and really liked it! Delicious chocolate and coffee flavors, nice mouth feel, went down smoothly. My friend really enjoyed it too.

And, of course, an awesome picture on the bottle (circus performers, I believe).

Yes, that Robust Porter is awesome. Great chocolaty and coffee flavors. Love the label with the strong man and the acrobat on it. I love that he is holding a barrel.

Today, I had the Duvel Belgian Golden Ale and I have to say that it was fantastic. I did not have the correct glass but the head was still very thick and left a trail of Belgian Lace. Reactions: Very refreshing, tasted like a Pilsner but more complex . I tasted some fruity flavors at first and then some slight spicy hops. The carbonation was so smooth and crisp. Very "drinkable" and it would pair nicely with some hard cheeses like Montasio or Asiago which both have fruity accents.

Ah Duvel. Certainly on of the best beers in the world. The stuff is absolutely fantastic. I haven't had one in about a year, I think I might have to pick one up soon.

I had a beer called "Bud Light" brewed by Anheiser Busch. Very good. Pours to a frothy cream head, hints of asparagus, coriander, a mild fois gras aftertaste on the sides of my tongue, and an autumnal musk not unlike the dew of a September morning. Belgian lace continued throughout, very interesting malt flavors, smooth yet complex nose.

Hmmmm...always an anonymous jackass in the crowd. At least spell Anheuser-Busch right.
